Sutton & Dudley - Builders

These developers, who had previously only built middleclass terrace houses, decided to embark on a more prestigious development, and approached the eminent Victorian architect, E.J.Tarver, However, like many builders of the period, they had financial difficulties. They mortgaged all the leases they owned to North British Mercantile Assurance in 1887, and defaulted in 1923. North British then began marketing the leases and by the 1960's the Stewarts were offering freeholds to all occupiers who wished to buy them. As far as is known, all freeholds are now in the hands of individual occupiers, small developers and Lambeth Council.
